Patrick Thompson joined the OHS staff as a technical assistant this year. Everyone is excited about this new addition including Thompson. So far, he's assisted OHS by distributing this year’s new laptops to students and being “first line defense” for problems with the machines. He explains how to fix minor problems with the laptops, including but not limited to what to do if the computer freezes, shuts down, or breaks, but also covers bigger problems. Thompson is here in case the students need help or they need guidance to show them how the computer operates.
“It’s not that different [from his previous job doing technical support], I am just working with students instead of adults, which I love,” Thompson said. “I got into this profession because I have a passion for computers and helping children.”
Luckily, that's just what he's doing at Orange and he’s adjusting to it nicely.
With a passion for computers, Thompson majored in electrical technology at North Carolina A & T State University. From there he worked at other companies doing technical support, but he wanted to work in Orange County and with kids so he applied for the job position at Orange High.
Thompson has lived in North Carolina his whole life and even grew up in Hillsborough. He went to OHS for his freshman and sophomore years and then transferred to Cedar Ridge for his junior and senior years, so being back at Orange is a flashback for him. When people first meet Thompson, “they would never guess he played sports as a child.” He said, “Most people think of me as a geek because I like computers.”
Thompson is happy he is now here to help and teach OHS more about the laptops and technology.
