Jamie Lea, a senior at Orange High School and a Varsity volleyball player, received the Extra Effort Award from WRAL news October 25, 2012. She received the award for excellence on the court as well as in the classroom. She was interview and presented the award by Tom Suiter. The interview was featured on the news channel and can be found online at WRAL.com.
Lea is a skilled volleyball player on the Varsity team at Orange High School. She has played volleyball since she was ten years old and has fallen in love with it. She plays the OH, also known as the outside hitter and the sixth rotation player.
Volleyball is her all time favorite sport and she enjoys it because of the traveling experiences and the competitive nature of the game. Through volleyball, she has traveled around the country with her team and has had the opportunity to meet different people.
She stated in the interview, "It helps to build relationships that will last a lifetime." She enjoys the thrill of her or her teammates making a good play. She starts out her games listening to the song Heart of a Champion by Nelly which pumps her up before stepping onto the court.
Lea has a tight bond with her teammates and wouldn't change anything about the team. Her teammates have supported her each step of the way and lead to the team's success. After all, volleyball is a team sport, and Lea knows that she could never have gone so far without her teammates. She lead her fellow teammates to the second round of playoffs for the 2012 season and feels that the season went "pretty good." However, she thinks that they could have made it farther in the playoffs.
The Extra Effort Award is given to students that excel both on the court and off, having good grades in the classroom and helping
their community. Reggie Boynton, an 2012 Orange High alumni, nominated Lea for this award, recognizing her passion and leadership for volleyball. However, Lea's family, friends, and coaches encouraged her to reach her full potential and helped her throughout the season.
A famous quote from her mom and dad has really had a huge impact in Lea's volleyball career. They tell her, "Let your talents speak for themselves". When she told about the award she would be receiving, she was in a state of shock but honored as well and a huge smile covered her face.
Lea plans to continue her career in volleyball. She received a full scholarship to the University of Tennessee and will be attending the school next year. Leas hopes to play on the USA High Performance team and other leagues over seas.
Lea is an outstanding student as well as volleyball player, and she plans to keep up the hard work. She goes by one of her favorite quotes: "Too much is given, much is required." Luke 12:48
