The joint school winter semi-formal that was scheduled to take place at Cedar Ridge on January 19 has been cancelled due to insufficient funding. CRHS students were not able to raise enough money through ticket sales to cover the cost of the semi-formal. The dance was expected to cost $900, but the profit from early ticket sales was low enough that it “did not make sense to sell [tickets] at the door,” according to Associate Principal Will Okun. The CRHS Student Government Association (SGA) met Tuesday to discuss if the dance will be rescheduled.

Mr. Felicelli, the CRHS SGA adviser, stated, “The cost of putting on this event is roughly $900 and our preliminary sign ups and advance ticket sales were such that we could not move forward based on the early numbers. CRHS is meeting today to explore the possibility of rescheduling and if so to refocus our efforts on marketing this event.”

OHS administrators expressed disappointment that the dance was cancelled. Okun stated that, “I want it to happen... I like to have dances. I think it’s good for the school. I don’t know if students want dances.” Mr. Johnson, the OHS principal, thought the cancellation was “horrible. I hate that [the semi-formal] was cancelled.”

Some students were also upset about the cancellation. Blake Hall, an OHS senior and the SGA president, stated, “I mean it’s kind of disappointing to me. It just shows that times are changing and that dances just aren’t the cool thing to go to anymore. The question now is what kind of events should the SGA and school start seeking that can get the students together and involved.”

This is the second joint semi-formal that OHS and CRHS have planned. The first semi-formal was held last year at Cedar Ridge, and it was extremely successful. Nearly 300 students attended the dance. Last year’s CRHS SGA president, Hannah Barnard, said, “[The dance was] definitely [a huge success]. We brought in huge profits, and Mr. Felicelli believes that this is the best dance Cedar Ridge has hosted during our ten years. We look forward to a collaborative semi-formal with Orange again next year.” The dance may still take place, if CRHS staff and SGA leaders choose to move it to another date.
