The Orange County FIRST robotics team 587 traveled to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, from February 28 to March 2 to compete in the FIRST Palmetto regional.  This was the first outing this year for the Hedgehogs, a combination of OHS and CRHS students, and their new robot Will.E. Climb.

The game this year, Ultimate Assent, involved climbing a pyramid and shooting frisbees. The event was sponsored by FIRST, For Inspiration & Recognition of Science & Technology. This is an international competition making robots to compete in an unique game.

The Hedgehogs started out with a disastrous 35-30 loss when the climbing mechanism had a major failure. After that match, the Hedgehogs began to change. The next match was 40-13 with the Hedgehogs scoring 10. The Hedgehogs then scored 13 in a 20-18 win, scored 13 in a 61-9 blowout win, scored another 13 in a 42-13 win, then won 44-31. The Hedgehogs’ winning streak ended with a 63-27 loss, the Hedgehogs contributing 13. The final match was one the team would rather forget, a 122-22 loss, with the Hedgehogs giving 13 to the losing team.

In selection, the Hedgehogs were passed over, but served as a reserve team. The Hedgehogs will be in action again from March 14 to 16 at Dorton Arena in Raleigh. Admission is free all days
