The Orange High School wrestling team went head-to-head against three other local high schools at home Tuesday, November 26. The Panthers came out successful by easily beating all three teams. 170-pound senior David Peters-Logue fought hard against Cedar Ridge to earn his 100th high school win.

OHS’ first match was against Northern Durham High School. In the first three weight classes OHS faced losses and had to make up a lot of team points. Sophomore Joe Scott, who finished last year as the runner-up for the 106-pound 3A State Championship, turned around the losing streak by pinning his opponent in the 120-pound weight class. After that, OHS pinned seven more of Northern’s wrestlers to come out victorious 54-17. This win was a positive ego boost that gave the Panthers momentum against the next two teams.

Cedar Ridge was the next team to be defeated. In this rivalry match, OHS had a rocky start, losing the first three weight classes again and having to forfeit another one. Scott, again, turned the losing streak around by getting a major decision. Sophomore Gonzalo Garcia was up next and got the first pin for OHS. It was smooth sailing for OHS after this. Peters-Logue was the next-to-last wrestler to go and pin his opponent in the first period, which gave last year’s 3A State runner-up his 100th win. When asked how he felt about his win he responded, “[It felt] pretty amazing and it is amazing that I have had the opportunity to wrestle this much... It’s not about me, it’s all about the team.” OHS beat Cedar Ridge 54-24.

The last round of matches was against Southern Alamance. This was the easiest win for Orange the whole night. Southern Alamance was only allowed three pins against Orange, but the Panthers got four pins, three forfeits, two decisions, one tech fall over, and one major decision. This round concluded the night with a final score of 58-18.

Dylan McKinnon, senior, who won two of his three matches for the night said, “As a team we did great. Though we had some initial setbacks in the beginning… we managed to power through and get the win. [Wrestling] is not about ‘what I can do to get better,’ it’s ‘what can I do to help the team be better.’ That’s what’s so great about Orange wrestling.”

The next match will be at Cardinal Gibbons December 4 followed by the Jim King Invitational at Orange which is a multiple-day tournament December 6-7.
