Time and time again, people around the world have faithfully expressed their opinions, both good and bad, about practically anything and everything, with the use of social media site Twitter. Thursday night was no different, with Twitter exploding with rave reviews and harsh critiques of ‘The Sound of Music Live!,’ starring country singer Carrie Underwood.  The play aired Thursday, December 5 on NBC.

“The Sound of Music Live!” was based on the original 1959 Broadway musical, which told the true story of the von Trapp family, who famously fled their native Austria as it was coming under Nazi control. The NBC special starred country pop singer and American Idol winner Carrie Underwood as young nun Maria, and British actor Stephen Moyer as Captain von Trapp.

Although “The Sound of Music Live!” is not based off of the widely known 1965 film classic, many of the mean and sarcastic tweets aimed at Underwood and her performance are from fans of the movie. The iconic movie stars Julie Andrews as the main character Maria, and many are accustomed to Andrews’ portrayal rather than Underwood’s. Fans have gone as far as to tweet “Gosh, this slapdash network production doesn't measure up to Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer's beloved classic. #EveryTweetRightNow,” tweeted by @,Heminator, as well as “The Day the (Sound of) Music Died.,” tweeted by @ScrewyDecimal.

On the other hand, fans of Underwood’s music have many positive remarks about Underwood’s performance. Underwood has received many praises in the form of tweets such as “@carrieunderwood in #TheSoundofMusicLive you rocked it girl, strong work! Please ignore hateful, ignorant people. You were great! God Bless!,” tweeted by @Sweetestangel 71.

In addition to criticisms and compliments of the production, several companies took to Twitter as a way to take advantage of the event and advertise their products in a comical way. DiGiorno, in particular, made the night worthwhile with tweets referencing popular songs from the show. Tweets from the frozen pizza company include “HOW DO YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE MARIA? GIVE HER PIZZA FOR GOODNESS SAKES #TheSoundOfMusicLive” and “YOU ARE 16, GOING ON 17 AND I'M ASSUMING YOU'D LIKE PIZZA FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY DINNERRRRRRR #BuyDiGiorno#TheSoundOfMusicLive.”
