Orange High School is close to becoming a 4A school and crowded lunches are making this more apparent. The growing number of students has caused some classes to switch lunch periods. Seniors in third lunch have lost their privilege to leave five minutes early to go to the cafeteria. The new semester has brought about a few changes, but this one is the most aggravating to students affected.
OHS Assistant Principal Will Okun entered some classes on Friday, January 24 to move people around. Classes such as Journalism and the online classroom in the third wing basement were moved from their respective lunch to first lunch. This annoyed some students since they were used to the lunch they were in. Haley Moser, a senior, said, “Mr. Okun told us we could either go to first or third lunch but not second because it was too crowded.”
Affected classes will have the new lunch for a week and administrators will see if the lunch switches are making a difference.
Seniors who had third lunch had their lunch privilege removed because the other two lunches are 25 minutes with a small break in between and third lunch was 30 minutes. When seniors were leaving early, it did not allow the cafeteria workers a break to clean the lunch room. Okun said he would try to work something out with the seniors so they could still have a privilege of some sort since he figured what seniors were worried about was keeping their respective tables at lunch.
