Frozen, the latest in a long line of Disney princess films, is a hilarious, emotional movie. Released in November 2013, it stars Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel as Anna and Elsa, respectively. Anna and Elsa are the princesses of Arendelle, a kingdom. Elsa, the older sibling, has magical ice powers and uses them when she plays with Anna, but an accident that nearly kills Anna forces her parents to lock Elsa away and erase some of Anna’s memories.

Elsa stays in her room, never playing with Anna. Anna, confused because she remembers that Elsa used to play with her, often asks her to play. Elsa is resigned to her circumstances and ignores her. The king and queen of Arendelle, Anna’s and Elsa’s parents, die while away on a trip, forcing Elsa to face the public and her sister. Disastrous events result.

A highlight of this movie, as with most Disney musicals, is the soundtrack. From a song Anna and Elsa sing called “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” to a talking snowman named Olaf’s (Josh Gad’s) song called “In Summer,” the songs are alternatively sad and humorous.

The supporting cast of characters also enhances the movie. The aforementioned Olaf is a charming, innocently sweet character. He sings about wanting to experience summer and loves Anna and Elsa. Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) and Hans (Santino Fontana), Anna’s love interests, are multifaceted, well-developed characters. One turns out not to be what audience members (or Anna) expected.

The plot of the movie, while not entirely unpredictable, has enough twists and turns before the inevitable happy ending that it will keep viewers interested. Anyone who has watched and liked previous Disney films will almost certainly like this movie as well.

At 102 minutes, Frozen is the perfect length. It doesn’t end too early or stretch on too long, so young children should be able to sit through it without complaining. Adults will likely enjoy the movie as well, maybe as much as their kids do.
