In what seemed like another regular season conference game, the Orange High men’s basketball team defeated the Tigers of Chapel Hill with a final score of 72-62.  Although the 10-point margin of victory may seem substantial enough, the Tigers kept it close throughout the entirety of the matchup with an excellent display of jump shooting against Orange’s 2-3 defense.  The good offensive execution by Chapel Hill, however, was no match for the great all-around play from the Panthers.  Orange knocked down a barrage of 3’s and mid-range jumpers, along with several pivotal blocked shots.

Despite the great play from both squads, one highlight topped them all.  After an unexpected steal early in Chapel Hill’s possession by senior JD Brooks, Brooks led a fast break capped off by an unprecedented “posterization” on a Chapel Hill defender.  The crowd erupted after the emphatic jam as the fans, players, and even coaches had to verify what they just witnessed by replaying it in their heads.  With the help of this spark plug jam and several other dunks by Brooks, the Panthers went on to defeat the Tigers.

Before the game, Orange’s head coach, Greg Motley, was awarded the Big Eight Conference Coach of the Year, as the trophy was presented by juniors Jawan Chambers and AJ Bradsher.

Next up, the Panthers will face the Eagles of Eastern Alamance at home on Friday night at 7 pm.  The players are encouraging fans to wear black in attendance to the game to “blackout” the stands.  Admission is $6.  Come out and support your Panthers as they make their next push towards a State Championship!
