The latest Orange High School Envirothon team went to its first competition Tuesday March 25 which was hosted at Elon University. Overall placings weren’t bad for the first year, with two of three teams placing in the top 15. The FFA team, headed by David Latta, placed 17th in the competition of over 28 teams.

Team One, or the FFA team, headed by Latta, was made up of officers and members of the FFA chapter at Orange High School. These students include Justin Pope, Preston Harris, Jacob Rodgers, Blake Thompson, Kirsten Brame, and Haven Roberts. “If we had been able to have more time to practice, we could have done better,” Blake said about his team’s performance. “It was a lot of fun though; I really enjoyed it,” he concluded.

Team Two, sponsored by Jenna Hunter, placed 11th overall, doing the best of the three teams from Orange High School. This team missed the opportunity to go to the state competition by a mere four places and just shy of 13 points. “Win or lose, it was a great learning experience and I look forward to next year’s team. This is definitely something I would recommend to everyone who has an interest in the environment,” Josh Leonard said. Team Two was composed of mostly sophomores at Orange including Jace Jordan-Cornell, Rowan Nygard, Hunter Spitzer, Josh Leonard, Lexi Moyer, and Hannah Link.

Team Three, the final team from the school, was led by Nina Daye and placed 15th overall. While they didn’t come as close to the top ten as other teams, they showed no lack of spirit and determination. Team Three, which included Josh Martin, Beth Bryan, Jose Ortega, Jakayla Wilkins, Sam Wade, and Joey Ricca, had no seniors so they will be back and ready to compete in next year’s competition. “I think if we plan it so we have more time next year to practice, we will be able to do a lot better,” Beth Bryan said.

Team meetings for this year’s team will start back up after spring break according to leader Jenna Hunter, to plan for next year’s teams and activities.
