The award winning movie, Forrest Gump, is still a big hit twenty years after it’s premier.  It is a comedious work of art that is abounding with funny characters, that will have you laughing until the very end.  You can’t walk away from the movie without it leaving a lasting impression on you.  As for many, that impression comes in the form of one of it’s most famous quotes, “Run Forrest, Run.”

It was released June 6, 1994, and it is still one of the greatest movies of all time.  IMDb, Internet Movie Database, ranks it as 14th in the top 250 best films.  They gave it a rating of 8.8 out of 10.  In addition to this ranking, it has won a myriad of awards, including 8 oscars, and numerous Academy Awards.  Some of the most impressive accolades include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor(Tom Hanks), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Visual Effects, and Best Film Editing.  Forrest Gump is very deserving of these accomplishments.

Directed by Robert Zemeckis, who works with Spielberg film-making, this film stars many major actors and actresses.  The main character, Forrest Gump, is played by Tom Hanks, an Academy Award winning star and Best Actor for this production.  He plays a disadvantaged character, who is often known for his famous speech impediment, that will have you laughing out loud, and in some cases crying.  He is such a loving character who uses his ability to run to save lives and inspire the public.  Robin Wright, winner of a 2014 Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Series, plays Forrest’s best friend, Jenny Curran.  The movie displays the heart wrenching relationship between two friends, and eventually soul mates.  This movie gave Curran and Hanks the recognition they needed to take flight in their successful careers.

Forrest Gump displays a series of historical events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Watergate Scandal during Richard Nixon’s presidency, and the hippy generation.  It covers the time period of 1944-1982.  The connection of the characters and these events is a unique quality specific to this movie, since the characters appear in each of these historical occurrences.  Forrest Gump adds humor to even the worst of America’s past mistakes.  For example, in the movie he accidentally uncovers the Watergate Scandal, but is oblivious to the severity of the situation.

Although this movie is full of fun and humor, there are moments that are troubling.  Forrest has to overcome much adversity especially due to his mental disabilities and crooked back, that is a result of scoliosis.  It is an inspirational story of redemption, as Forrest recovers from discrimination and establishes a worthy name for himself. He entered the Army and developed a close friend named Bubba Blue, played by Mykelti Williamson.   The story of their friendship is very heart-warming and funny at times, but inevitably may bring a tear to your eye.

This movie is appropriate for all ages, and all kinds of people.  It will bring a tear to your eye, either through laughter or melancholy.  It rated among one of the best films of all time, and it definitely lives up to its reputation.  If you are in need of a good laugh, then you should see this movie.   "Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."  With this movie there are always twists and turns that will leave you yearning for more.
