As most families gather around the table dining on the food to be thankful for, others find themselves outside, waiting in line for a store to open on Black Friday. This shopping day has become a national holiday and is a way for Americans to ring in the Christmas season, right after indulging in the pie and stuffing that Thanksgiving brings.
Black Friday can technically be called “Black Thursday,” because stores open as early as 4:00 pm on November 27. Additionally, some stores have chosen to make Black Friday a week-long event, such as Walmart, who spreads their deals throughout a 10-day period.
Many members of the Orange High School student body have experienced the shopping night at least once. Senior Rachel Shinnick has made it a holiday tradition to “wrap up Thanksgiving dinner early” in order to head out for the deals. “One year I waited at Best Buy for a laptop. Sure it was chaos, but it was totally worth it for the price--also the memories! I usually go Black Friday shopping with a group of friends. Together we are able to scrounge for deals and sales,” Shinnick explains.
The annual event has become a night full of savings, but also madness. “Black Friday Horror Stories” have become a trend, and this night seems to bring out the crazy in every shopper. Before the turkey leaves the table, people forget their things to be thankful for and automatically rush for some bargain-hunting. “It can be completely insane. One year, people began skipping the line in Target and the patient people went nuts! Everyone began shouting, me included, and the police had to come and escort the ‘skippers’ out,” Megan Joyner said, giving her best horror story. According to Black Friday Death Count, the hysterical night has caused seven deaths and 90 injuries. Black Friday is no longer just a night full of savings, but also dangerous shoppers.
While the leftovers join the refrigerator, the shoppers hit the stores. To some people, Black Friday is just a way for Americans to forget their thanks, while others have made the night a tradition. There are two types of people in this world: the ones that go Black Friday shopping and the ones that take a snooze after their pumpkin pie. Whichever type of person the reader finds themselves to be, they need to be sure to beware the mania that Black Friday entails.
