Looking For Alaska by John Green is an emotional love story that will have readers laughing hysterically on one page, and crying on the next. The book is for young adults, so there is some young adult content in the book like drinking and sex, but it is a wonderful story regardless. The book starts out with Miles, the main character, getting dropped off at Culver-Creek Preparatory High School, a school his father and uncles went to.
On the first day of school, Miles, soon to be nicknamed Pudge, meets his future best friend called The Colonel and the unforgettable, rebellious Alaska Young, whom Pudge immediately falls in love with. Her mom died when she was only eight years old, and she was there to witness it. She relies on alcohol, her friends, smoking behind the principal’s back, and reading to cope. Alaska is the school pranker, known for her famous and mischievous pranks that no one but her, with the help of her best friends, could pull off. The book takes a turn for the worse when one of Culver Creek’s most beloved students encounters a tragedy that will change the lives of the students at Culver Creek forever.
