The second race of the NASCAR season was held on Sunday, March 1, at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. Joey Logano qualified for the poll to continue his hot start, after winning the Daytona 500 the week before. With multiple big name drivers having qualifying issues, including Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, and Matt Kenseth, the back of the pack was bolstered with star power which set up a great race.
Shortly before the start of the race, rain started to come down slightly, which resulted in a small rain delay. The first lap saw pole sitter Logano get out to a strong lead early, and he led most of his 84 laps in the first half because of his strong start. Harvick and Jimmie Johnson slowly caught up to Logano’s car mid race. When Harvick passed Logano, he dominated the race, leading for 116 laps.
Johnson eventually found a good groove and passed Harvick. Gordon, a racing icon driving in his last season, got involved in a late race crash caused by Greg Biffle spinning out, which would cause many wrecks in the middle of the track. Gordon finished 41st because of this. Johnson held off Harvick for the win. The standings have Logano in first and Johnson rising three spots to claim second from Harvick, who dropped two spots into third.
