Monday, September 24, representatives from the Orange County Junior Classical League met with the Orange County Board of Education at 7 p.m. Nicolas Mauriello, OHS Latin and Mythology teacher and OCJCL advisor, Sarah Vassello, OCJCL president, and Katherine Kirkman, OCJCL vice-president, were introduced by Michael Gilbert, Public Information Officer for Orange County Schools. The board recognized OCJCL for its efforts and wins at the 2012 National Latin Convention located at Wake Forest University.
The meeting was opened by Donna Coffey, chair, who read the agenda and introduced the moment of silence. The moment of silence was in memory for a deceased board member. Next, Gilbert gave a short introduction and asked for Nicholas Mauriello to elaborate on the OCJCL National wins. Mauriello recognized the efforts of 2012 Cedar Ridge graduate Alden Roberts, Kirkman, and Vassello.

Roberts, who currently attends Davidson University and could not attend the board meeting, won 1st in Mixed Media 12, 4th in Watercolor 12, 5th in Impromptu Art 12, and 8th in Black Pencil 12. Kirkman and Vassello won 1st place for the local small traditional scrapbook. Mauriello, Kirkman, and Vassello shook hands with the board members, accepted their congratulations, then promptly left.
"I think it was really cool that we were recognized," said Vassello. "We worked really hard all year, especially on that scrapbook, and it's nice to know that other people appreciate that." When asked if the recognition would change OCJCL's approach to the current year, Vassello responded, "Definitely. Because we had a really successful year last year, there are a lot of expectations for OCJCL. We have to make sure that we're prepared to meet those expectations, if not exceed them, regarding everything that we do."
