April 14 through 20 of April was National Library Week. The point of the week was to show support for your local school or public library. They want people to support libraries by checking books out, making donations, and volunteering to shelve books. National Library Week is celebrated by millions of people over the globe. Mrs. Shay Mustian ran the event.
The first contest was called “Guess the Mystery Passage” where a different reading passage was read on the morning announcements each day. If someone recognized the passage, they would write down the title of the book on a piece of paper and turn it into their first period teacher. Mrs. Mustian announced each winner at the end of the day.
The second contest was called “Check Out A Book.” Any student who checked out a book from the library wrote down his or her name to be entered in the contest. Library staff will draw one of the names and announce it on Friday afternoon.
The third contest was called “Guess How Much It Weighs!” Students were able to stop by in their free time and guess how much a book weighs. The winner was announced at the end of the day on Friday as well.
Mustian did not know the exact number of people who came to the library because of National Library Week, but “it attracts a lot of people.” National Library Week is a celebration she has wanted to do in order to attract students to come to the library and to promote reading. Next year she wants to have more entertaining activities and bring in another author.
