College Application Week, which started on November 18, 2013, is a national event where some schools waive college application fees for students. Phyllis Farlow, an OHS counselor, said, “It is a good advantage for the twelfth graders.”
For the average college, students are usually eligible for application fee waivers. College representatives encourage students to talk with their school counselor well in advance of College Applications Week to discuss financial need and to complete the form.
Not every school waives application fees, but most public schools and some private schools do. The cost of a college application is normally about $70, so seniors should take advantage of this opportunity.
College Application Week was late this year because colleges have control over when it occurs, primary schools are unable to do anything but wait. Most teachers and counselors agree that College Application Week should be earlier.
There were about 52 OHS students that applied for free applications. Over 69,386 applications were submitted from all over the country. There were many colleges and universities that students got to send free applications to such as Campbell University, Catawba College, Salem College, and Bennett College.
