One of the many ways Orange High School is represented at the North Carolina State Fair is through art. Every year, OHS students submit pieces of artwork to be judged at the annual state art show. At the show, schools of all levels, as well as individual artists of all ages, enter their work to be judged against other entries of the same category for monetary prizes. The art department recently learned that OHS took second place among high school entries at the show this October, with two artists awarded an individual honorable mention.
Artists who represented OHS include seniors Austin Durham, Matthew Crabtree, Damien Thomas, and Maryann Giordano, along with junior Jackson Ellis and sophomore Jillian Owens. Artists came from all class levels, with pieces in the show representing multiple mediums, including acrylic paintings, pencil sketches, collages, and even a piece painted with coffee.

In addition to winning second place, two OHS artists were awarded an individual honorable mention: Maryann Giordano and Damien Thomas. Giordano, who has represented OHS at the art show in previous years, submitted an acrylic painting for this year’s competition. Her piece depicted a scene from a photo she took while on a mission trip to Guatemala City of a young shoe shiner. When asked how she felt about having her piece in the show, she said, “It was really exciting to get my work in the State Fair, especially since it’s my senior year.” The piece which won Thomas’ individual honorable mention was a large and detailed collage made with magazine pieces.
OHS art teachers Elizabeth Dell-Jones and Mary Parker were both very happy with their students’ success. When asked how they felt about the results of the competition, Dell-Jones responded, “The competition at the fair is very tough. I am very proud of my students,” and Parker replied, “I knew they were fabulous works of art. It made me feel really good when other folks also told me they were fabulous works of art.”
