Thursday, April 10, Gravelly Hill Middle School held their fourth annual Cultural Explosion to showcase many different cultures from around the world and in our own community. It was a lively event, full of food and fun.
In the halls of GHMS, there were booths set up by parents, community leaders, and students. These booths were based off of certain cultures in different parts of the world. Some booths were completely decked out with information and objects from the culture, and some even had their booth leaders dressed in the appropriate outfit from their culture.
Some of the most elaborate booths in the event were the African, Sochi Olympics and Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation booths.
There were other events going on as the booths were in full swing. Many performances were put on in the GHMS gym by gifted community members. Some OHS students were involved in the performances as well. The Todos Unidos Club, or All United Club, was one of the groups performing. Members were performing a dance that represented their culture. The Hedgehogs, our robotic engineering club, were also at the event, displaying their hobby and culture by presenting their achievements in engineering. In front of the building, there was also an African drum circle. Everyone gathered around and would beat out tribal tunes on the drums.
Many food truck vendors from the community came out to support the event and some of the money made was donated back to the community. Some of the food trucks with the most popular food and most brightly-colored food trucks were the Kona Ice Truck, which served a snow cone snack, and Mama Duke’s.
