Over spring break, Laura Allen ventured on a trip to Haiti to lend a helping hand. With Haiti Outreach Ministries (HOM), Allen and a group of 11 others gave to an unfortunate community by painting a church and houses and roofing houses.
“Haiti is unbelievable and different than the US in a lot of ways, but the main difference is the level of poverty,” Allen said. “You hear about it on the news and see pictures of it, but it’s a completely different experience when you see it up close and personal… One day when we were there, we went to Cite Soleil, which is one of the third-poorest places in the world.”
Another adventure they had when they were there was that they had the opportunity to visit an orphanage for disabled children and spend some time with them. Not only did they give back to orphans, but they helped other children too. Allen said, “While there I decided to sponsor a child so that they can continue to go to school even though their family cannot afford to send them. The little girl I sponsored is four and her name is Abeila.”
Hopefully Allen’s experience will encourage others to visit Haiti for a life-changing experience like hers.
