While students gathered around the Panther’s Den last month, trends were being set and shown during New York Fashion Week (NYFW). This semi-annual event, held in New York City, showcases the season's trends, styles, and outrageous runway looks.

This trend-setting week sets the bar for Panthers’ styles, as many students can be seen incorporating NYFW looks into their wardrobe. Senior Rachel Shinnick particularly liked the official colors of autumn 2014, “radiant orchid and royal blue.” She stated, “I immediately shopped for sweaters and accessories in those colors. I especially love the royal blue, so I’m looking to add that color to my closet.” As fall approaches in Hillsborough, many students have sought to swap bright colors for the dull hues of autumn.

In addition, students can be seen trading tank tops for coats, particularly leather jackets. NYFW featured several faux fur and leather pieces, and classmates have welcomed them to their attire. Senior Hannah Link opts for her black leather jacket in the morning, noting its “versatility and trendiness for the year.” Moreover, leather riding boots and fur vests have been spotted frequently on campus.

For men, NYFW featured a sporty vibe and darker hues on the runway. As Braden Weber rocks a grey Ralph Lauren Polo shirt and dark-wash jeans, he fits the fashion-mold perfectly. “I like to dress basic--nothing too outrageous, but I also don’t want to look like I just rolled out of bed,” Weber said of his style. Meanwhile, Jackson McClintock incorporates a signature fall color into his wardrobe, “aurora red,” through his pants. The male students have stepped up their style and proven that NYFW is not solely for the female population.

While Hillsborough may be far from New York City, its styles are similar and on-point. The closing of NYFW leaves Panthers to update their closets and open the fall season with welcoming, well-dressed arms.
