Since the start of the school year, there has been an increase in school fighting. But why? “No idea. Not because of more opportunity, but for other reasons,” said Deputy Andre Richmond, the school resource officer.
Many may think that these fights stemmed from PLUS Lunch, but others hope not. If fighting has impacted PLUS Lunch, “some areas could have restricted access,” said Richmond.
The administration at OHS does believe that students need to take advantage of the tutoring offered during lunch. Richmond added, “Students have free time and don’t use it wisely like they should.”
Assistant Principal Will Okun feels that PLUS Lunch is going “very well,” adding that “students are taking advantage of the 30 minute tutoring period, but more need to take advantage as well.” Okun pointed out that, with one lunch second semester, PLUS Lunch will be even better since clubs can meet during the day.
Like Richmond, Okun believes that fighting since last year has increased, with some of the fights being during PLUS Lunch. “The increase in fighting isn’t a result of PLUS Lunch, but I’m not sure why fighting has increased. The fighting has been over several different reasons,” says Okun.
A big factor in PLUS Lunch is the administration's trust in students to make the right decisions and choices. “If students show that they can’t use that trust wisely, administrators may need to evaluate,” Okun added.
